Sun Safety Optician Visit

26th Jun 2023

As part of our Light topic, we have been learning about the benefits and dangers of the sun. We also learned about UV light and its dangers. We set up an experiment to see the effects UV light has on coloured paper.

Jill, a local optician, came in to talk to us about her job. She did an activity to show us how important our eyes are to us.  Some of us were blindfolded and we tried to place a sticker on Olaf’s nose. She showed us the machine she uses to test eyes. We learned that not only glasses can correct our vision but also contact lenses. Some of the class had an opportunity to put a contact lense into Olaf’s eye. We all had an opportunity to use 3D glasses to see an image. She explained about the different parts of the eye, the pupil and the retina. We used mirrors to watch our pupil getting bigger and smaller as it adapted to the light. Jill explained that the pupil closes when it is very bright to protect the retina from damage. This is why we should never look directly at the sun but we could wear sunglasses or sun hats. The sun could damage the retina. She explained about UV light and we then went outside to see the different parts of the light through a diamond or prism. We saw rainbows. Thank you to Jill for coming into school to help us understand our topic better.
