Exploring Reflection in P3-5

3rd Jun 2026

As part of their learning about light and reflection, pupils in P3–5 have been investigating how light travels in straight rays and how it behaves when it meets different materials.

This week, the children created their own reflection testers using a page, a torch and a selection of materials. By shining a beam of light onto each surface, they observed whether the light was reflected or not. Materials such as foil and shiny plastics reflected the light clearly, while fabrics and cardboard absorbed most of it.

This hands‑on investigation helped pupils identify which materials are most reflective. They will now use this information as part of a design challenge: creating ideas for a new school bag that is safer and more visible in low‑light conditions.

The activity encouraged pupils to think like real designers — testing, comparing and using evidence to make informed decisions.
